Types of Regression

#Basic #Short #DataAnalytics post #Day2 One of the most important tools in the pocket of an data scientist specialising in Predictive Analytics is Regression. Though we mostly talk about linear and logistic regression, there are several other types of regression one needs to be aware of. First let me try and put linear and logistic regression in simple words. #Beware this is based on my basic understanding and may have errors at certain points. Linear Regression: Involves predicting a variable (dependent) variable using some independent variables. Take this case of y=mx+C where y is the dependent variable and x is the independent variable or similarly, y=ax1+bx2+cx3 and so on. Thus the value of y can be predicted given the values of x1, x2, x3, etc. Can be performed in tools like R, using the ln() function. Logistic Regression Involves predicting the value of a categorical variable (recall categorical variable covered in the previous post?) using dependent variables. It can...

Decision Sciences - Post 1

#ShortPost - will cover it all over a period of time With the increasing importance of data in making decisions, let us look at some of the data related terms used in statistics which can help you make data driven decisions. Types of variables: Two important types of variables which should not leave you stunned are: Categorical (or nominal) variables Ordinal variables Categorical:  A categorical variable (sometimes called a nominal variable) is one that has two or more categories, but there is no intrinsic ordering to the categories. Ordinal: An ordinal variable is similar to a categorical variable.  The difference between the two is that there is a clear ordering of the variables.  Interval: An interval variable is similar to an ordinal variable, except that the intervals between the values of the interval variable are equally spaced.  Check the following link for more details: http://stats.idre.ucla.edu/other/mult-pkg/w...

Arsenal F.C

Arsenal F.C Of the football teams I like, Arsenal occupies the number 1 spot. My interest in football got generated due to a variety of reasons, one of it being that all my friends were followers of the game. It is legends who make you attract or turn away from a team and Arsenal has a lot of such legends that anyone would want to be a fan of such skill and sporting ability. Lets just talk a bit about Arsenal today, the team to which I have just obtained a Digital membership. Oh and the digital membership by the way gives you access to a lot of Arsenal apps, newsletters and so on. One day I hope to obtain a full red membership which obviously comes at a price. So coming back to the topic in hand, Arsenal F.C. (Thanks to beloved Wikipedia for providing all the required snippets of info) Arsenal Football club is based in Highbury, London. It has won 13 league titles and 12 FA cups along with numerous other achievements. Current league position of 6 and has an impressive line u...

What kind of workspace suits you?

Saw an article in HBR which prompted me to think on this topic? What kind of workplace suits you is an important question which needs to be asked by everyone at some point in time. So what kind of workplace suits you the most? Are your values and performance enhancers in sync with that of the company? There were mainly 4 types of workplaces that were described in the article: 1. Small is beautiful: Simplicity is the best. Are you a firm believer of this philosophy? There are people who believe that keeping it is simple is the best sophistication that can be designed. No fancy expensive paintings on the corridor walls, no decorations hanging around celebrating vibrancy and energy. No flashy colours all over the floor. Do you keep pictures all around your workspace? Or prefer a clean slate which should be used strictly for official purposes. So that is it..you have clearly decided whether this is the dull, boring yet peaceful space that would motivate you to perform to your ...

Mumbai - The city of dreams..

Have heard stories of people heading to Mumbai to make it big in life. If you want to make it big in life, Mumbai is the place to be in. So here I am, Mumbai the city of dreams.. First week was at a luxurious hotel, so no complaints there. Office is a sprawling campus with a huge building right at the centre of the city. Enjoyed the first few days making news friends, having the good food and enjoying the high life at this busy city. Flat hunting was a painful exercise as usual with brokers trying to outsmart us at every move. Will get to that in a bit. Let me describe my hotel stay a bit more elaborately, it was an amazing hotel room with all the amenities that you would expect from a modern hotel. It had hot water. Of all the things available in a hotel, including AC, I believe the best part is hot water. Makes all your tiredness go away, or makes you tired enough to hit the bed. Gives you the feeling of freshness all of a sudden, that blast of freshness out of nowhere. So...
