It used to be a trend those days, well, anyway, in my small classes, just as we entered into a new school year our teachers used to ask us to introduce ourselves.
What is your name? How do you come to school? Where is your house? What I your hobby?
HOBBY— That’s right “What is your hobby?”
A question which we find quite common, in many interviews and all. Never ever wanting to be inferior to anyone in anything, I used to say without even the slightest of hesitation “READING”. Lets just say I kept on doing this till my 8th standard and I must admit I had no plans of stopping it either.
Until one fine day my English sir said to me: “Oh! So reading is your hobby, is it, that’s just good, well.....I just want to know who your favorite author is and why? Which do you think is the most magnificent piece of work that you have ever read?”
Undoubtedly I was in a fix situation. Being a guy, who had never ever bothered to read even the silliest of comics, I stood there gazing at the group before me hoping that I would sink into the ground below me. Luckily, maybe sensing my inability to answer, my sir kindly asked me to take my seat and called the next student. “What a relief! ”. But I was undoubtedly feeling embarrassed.
But later my sir called me and said, “Don’t worry; I never used to read myself when I was your age. I’ll give you a book, one of my favorites”. Saying that he handed me a book, I read the label, it read TIME MACHINE. I saw that it was a children’s edition of H.G. Wells’ Time Machine.
Deriving inspiration from the embarrassing situation that had occurred to me earlier that day, I read the book with a lot of vigour. I finished that 100 page book the same day itself. In the end I cried out, “FANTASTIC!”. Truly marvelous, pictures started flooding my mind, the entire story was interesting. I felt like I was born into a new world. From that day on I started reading voraciously. It was as if my thirst was quenched when I got a new book. I realized the beauty of reading. And now finally I can frankly say: “My hobby is READING”.
