Recently I was reading about the United Nations and it was then that I started wondering what lead to the formation of this great international organization. Though I have a high level idea, I felt the need to delve into the details and get a proper understanding. In addition to this I also felt like putting it on my blog. The basic idea is to write about a topic each day. Make it as long as possible during the day and conclude it by the end of the day whatever the amount of info gathered. Get Knowledge and Share knowledge. Live and let live. Blah!
If you open the website www.un.org and check the about UN tab, you will find some basic details such as...or wait. How about a question?
Who coined the name United Nations?
Any clue?
It was the late US president Franklin D Roosevelt and was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January, 1942. Now that's an easy date to remember right? All you need to keep in mind is the year 1942. And did you know that American boxer Muhammad Ali was also born in the same year? Well, it was during the World War II. It had representatives of 26 nations who pledged to continue fighting together against the Axis powers. It consisted of Germany, Japan and Italy for those whose history lessons have started fading from memory(like myself!)
Before the formation of the UN existed an international organization name 'League of Nations'. League of nations dissolved in 1946 and handed over its mission to the UN. Initial discussions to form an organization like UN was proposed and planned at a conference in Dumbarton Oaks, Washington DC. This was during August to October 1946 and was attended by representatives from the Republic of China, erstwhile USSR, United States and United Kingdom. UN was formally formed on October 24, 1945.
The official headquarters of the UN is in New York which has been so since its establishment in 1952.
In order to go deeper into the foundation of UN, we have to understand in detail about the World War I and II which better be saved for some other time. This post was fairly short. Post lunch nap time effect I guess. Well, its kind of weird cause I'm in office and I won't be able to sleep. Maybe I lost interest in the topic. Also it seems my manager is back, so better be off now and come back with a different and more interesting topic in the next post. Happy reading! :)
