So, I was in my home town for a week with no specific work to do and the first thing that comes to my mind is: "Hey, I haven't watched a superstar movie lately!". And after a while I logged into my BookMyShow (BMS) account to check out the new movies in theatres. During my time at K'kode I don't really bother to check for movies given various constraints. Anyway it was refreshing to check BMS after a while. What used to be a habit during my time at the 'City of Pearls' (recently in news due to Ivanka Trump's visit) seemed unfamiliar at first. I felt rusty while using the website. Anyway I set the location to my hometown and checked for the latest movies. There were a couple of new ones including Justice League - which I had already watched in K'kode. (Oh, no constraint is stopping me from watching JL!) and some relatively older movies like Villain (starring Mohanlal and Manju Warrier and Siddique and Vishal and Hansika and ..I'm tired..!) and Ramleela (starring Dileep). Saw some other movies with the youth star cast as well. Anyway I decided to give Villain a try. No, this is not a post where I would be "troll"ing any movie or making fun of the story line or things like that.
I just wanted to point out a couple of striking similarities between the storyline of Villain and another Mohanlal movie that was released a couple of years back (2012 to be precise) named "Grandmaster (GM)".
1. Story build up (Done)
2. Mohanlal's entry. Top Cop. IG in GM vs. ADGP in Villain
Mohanlal's character used to be a daring cop in the both these movies. Currently not interested in being in the police force due to personal tragedy (will cover this in the next point)
3. Personal tragedy
In GM, Mohanlal's character is affected due to a divorce and a related case which causes him to lose interest in police
In Villain, Mohanlal's character is affected due to an accident which killed his wife and daughter
4. Family
Mohanlal's character has a daughter in both the movies. He is very close with his daughter in both these movies
5. Role of antagonist in provoking the hero
The antagonist personally tries to get Mohanlal's character involved (by getting his attention) in his/her activities
6. Chase. Fight. Finish.
Mohanlal's character uses his old brilliance to track down and catch the criminal
Not that I am complaining! I am a huge Mohanlal fan and love his cop roles. Though I personally liked GM more, it was just interesting to note the similarities between these two movies. Hoping for more interesting roles and characters from "The Complete Actor" soon.
Signing off for now..!
